Voice Acting in Necromance

The largest feature we added to the paid version of Necromance was adding a full voice track for the game. Luckily, Subversionary Studios has something of an ace up our sleeve, the amazing voice acting of Ursula Black.

Miss Black’s ability to build a character from the script and give it life in ways I never imagined is remarkable. For instance, Nevermore’s Germanic accent wasn’t in my head at all when making the game’s script. Ursula dissected the lines, studied various inspirations, and when I heard the lines being delivered, it stunned me how perfect it sounded. It was like I had written for that accent.

Miss Black also provides voices for a number of ghosts. Nevermore is a vessel in which the dead speak, so they use Nevermore’s voice. But pitch, tone, accents, and vocal mannerisms were all customized for the ghost that was being invoked. The result is a full cast of characters who all sound like individuals despite speaking through the same source.

But not all the ghosts and characters are bound by Nevermore’s tongue. We have an amazing cast of actors to fill in the rest of the roles. Nicole Sahagian speaks for the player’s lady love, the ancient hero Orla. One particularly powerful spirit, Belinda Beldam, is graced with the talents of Tiana Randal-Quant.

The youngest member of our team, Sid Murdoch, took on the voice of our friendly silly fungus, Pilz. Finally, the very humble and hahndsome Rowan Thorn rounds the cast as the guardian of Orla’s tomb.

Tomorrow I’ll talk more about the technical process of adding voice acting to the game. Until then, don’t let a silly thing like death get in the way of true love. Necromance will be released on Valentine’s Day!
